Fringe Fest is the Best Fest

Country Fest? No thanks. Folk Fest? I’ll pass. Fringe Fest? I’m there!

Last Sunday I saw my first fringe show of the year, and I wasn’t the least bit disappointed. Lady Skits is a MUFF-Stache Collective featuring four young women exploring the ways of feminism in a very modern and hilarious way. The collection of skits accurately depicts what young women go through in regards to sex, friendships, sex, relationships, sex, menstruation, oh...and more sex! 

During this 45 minute performance you’ll see everything from ancient Greeks texting and watching porn, to booty call rapping, to giant vaginas on stage. Don't tell me you're not the least bit intrigued!

It began one naked, drunken hot tub night.

After titful comparison, fretful debate on hair removal and voicing our vaginas, we aimed to change the world one ha-ha-ha at a time.

Our collective creation (and bad boyfriends, F papers and insidious one-night stands) led to the obscurity of this sketchy comedy Lady Skits.

In a dick joke-dominated world, let's get some vagina up in heeere!

Quite the Conundrum

I’m willing to bet we’ve all had the same problem...can’t get a job without experience, can’t get experience without a job. Someone somewhere is going to have to change this one day. 

I had a job interview earlier this week, and I was excited for it because this time it was a job in communications. The position called for a summer student to handle media/community relations, sponsorships, and odds and ends here and there. The company was looking for a student (who would be returning to school in the fall) to work full time during the summer months, and hopefully onto part time when classes resumed.

I felt as though the interview went well, and the interviewer seemed to be really engaged with my portfolio. By the end of it, I was rather confident that I had a fighting chance to land the position. But unfortunately, it was a no go. I was told in an email that my interview went really well, and that there was clearly a lot I could contribute to the company, but that they had decided to go with a candidate with more experience.

More experience? 

This troubled me for two reasons. 

1.       Because the position specifically called for student applicants, there is a strong chance the majority of applicants are going to have a limited amount of experience related to the position

2.       I was told that the company had interviewed other CreComm students for the position, and chances are, we all have around the same types of experience (probably the exact same)

Aside from the fact that I really want a communications job this summer, the result of this interview has gotten me worried for when it’s graduation time, and my fellow classmates (and friends) are applying for the same jobs, having had the same experiences. As I’m sure most CreCommers do, I would love to have a job landed before I graduate, and I’m scared that it’s not going to happen. The program does have a rather high success rate, but with any graduating class, there is always someone who’s going to fall by the wayside.

I don’t want to be that person!

Summer Lovin'...hopefully!

With less than a month of school left, the summer months are fast approaching. Last summer I didn’t really do too much. I worked full time as the assistant manager at a Wal-Mart portrait studio, and part time at Penningtons. I only went to the beach once or twice because apparently going to the beach involves tons of planning and coordination. Back in the day all you had to say was “who’s down to go to the beach?” and everyone was in. I guess because we’re all getting older and have more demands that take up time and energy, doing something seemingly simple as heading down to the beach, can’t be as easy as it once was. 

Anyway...

I’ve been looking for a summer job or internship within the communications industry, preferably a job. So far I’ve been applying for jobs outside of Winnipeg. I didn’t do any travelling last year, and so I thought it would be efficient for me to kill two birds with one stone. 

In addition to getting a new job, I really want to, and really NEED to start working on getting things for my Red Dress Gala in order. It’s going to be a ton of work, which I’m excited for, but if I get an out of town job for the summer, it would be harder to coordinate things while I’m not here. Not impossible...but harder.

I also really want to visit my cousin in Calgary. I haven’t seen him since last April and I would love to see his new place. One of the jobs I applied for (I actually had the interview this morning) would allow me to travel across Canada to carry out a promotional campaign, and I believe one of the stops is Calgary. How perfect would that be if I got the job? That means I would kill three birds with one stone. 

This could quite possibly be a very big stone.
