Picture Perfect

Some of you may think getting accepted into to the Creative Communications program at Red River College was as simple as filling out an application. My fellow CreCommers will vouch for me when I say the application process was not in any way, a quick and easy task.

One of the process components was to submit a photo essay. The photographs needed to be taken ourselves, and had to be linked by a central theme. I was nervous at first because I in no way consider myself to be a professional photographer, but I do love to take pictures; just look at my 50 million photo albums on Facebook.

My photographic style usually resembles that of paparazzi-like shots, aka, not a real style at all. I had no idea what my theme was going to be, but I knew exactly who I wanted to photograph…Michal and Christine. These two girls are ridiculously cute and photograph BEAUTIFULLY….I knew I had to include them. Here are my favourite pictures from “Charmaine’s Fabulous Photo Shoot”…

Christine

Michal

I guarantee it was the faces of these beautiful young women who got me into college. Sure, perhaps I had a little something to do with it too. I was and am still really thankful to Michal and Christine for being so quick to help me out. Next semester everyone in first-year CreComm is going to working in groups to create our very own magazines. Whatever my magazine topic turns out to be (I’m really really REALLY hoping I don’t get a gamer magazine), I hope these ladies will lend me their cute little faces once again.

I’m really hoping I get a more professional camera for Christmas! I would love to spend more time taking photos and learning how to get different and interesting shots. I’ll leave that gift up to you mom!

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Favourites

A lot of you probably watched the VS fashion show on Tuesday, or at least you should have. It was FANTABULOUS! The whole show was put together beautifully and had huge entertainment value, even if you aren't a Victoria's Secret shopper. Show performers included Maroon 5, Kanye West, Jay-z, and my ultime favourite, Nicki Minaj!

Fun Facts
  • Over 300 pounds of glitter was used throughout the show
  • Out of the 38 angels who walked the runway, 15 of them were brand new
  • Lead singer of Maroon 5, Adam Levine, is currently dating one of the angels, Anna Vyalitsyna
Here were two of my favourite moments of the show:

I LOVE Nicki Minaj, and the whole Club Pink line was absolutely my favourite of the show! Most of the half sweaters were some of my favourite pieces, along with the half pink graffitied leather jacket.

I've liked Kanye West and Jay-Z separately, but wasn't sure if I'd like them together...I do. The song they're performing for the first time  is from their new Welcome to the Throne album. Kanye West also performed at the show last year.

I'm already anticipating how amazing the show will be in 2012!

The Rachel Zoe Project

This Thanksgiving I will be spending the day reviewing proper uses of semicolons and commas, spitting out a cliche free short story, and watching The Rachel Zoe Project marathon on CosmoTV. Right now they're showing all of last year's season 3 episodes, and the 2011 season 4 premeire is tonight at 8PM. For those of you who have never watched the show, here's a description I borrowed from CosmoTV's website:

The Rachel Zoe Project is a docu-drama that follows celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and her team as they endeavor to take Zoe's business to the next level. In the series, the perfectly styled, go-to force among "it" starlets, fashion houses, beauty firms, and magazine editors will give viewers a fly on the wall look at how she juggles constant deadlines, fashion shows, and celebrity clients. Zoe will show viewers how her personalized touch has made her a household name by making over and styling models, private clients, advertising campaigns, editorial shoots, and runway shows in each episode.

In the thrid episode of season three Rachel's assistant Brad Goreski (also a style director) is trying to get clothing donations for a fashion show that Naomi Campbell is putting together to raise money to help those in Haiti. Brad sent out pitch emails that were all generalized when they should have been tailored to each individual designer, explaining why their clothes would be an asset to the show; as I feel Melanie would agree. He also didn't give enough information about the show which I don't think helped at all. One of his opening sentences read "I was wondering if you could help us out with a few pieces". I think it would have been more effective if he wrote something along the lines of "We would be honoured to incorporate some of your garments into our show"...or something along those lines.

Needless to say, poor Brad didn't get any donations from the emails he sent out! Had he been a CreComm student, he'd have been rolling in clothes ;)

Louis Vuitton Fashion Show

I actually found a YouTube video of the spring collection fashion show if you would like to take a look. I LOOOOOVE every single purse and every single pair of shoes in the line. And I really like how the show was put together. Mind you the stage looks more like winter than it does spring, but hey, it looks good. The stage is so nice it almost makes me like the clothes...but not quite.

Kanye West Clothing Line

Kanye West debuted his new women's fashion line during Paris Fashion Week and apparently received a lot of criticism. I actually really like it. A lot of the pieces reveal a lot of clevage which I think is done in a sort of interesting way. There are a few pieces that I wasn't too fond of but overall, not too shabby.

Louis Vuitton 2012 Spring Collection

The Louis Vuitton spring collection seems to feature a lot of dresses that resemble doily patterns that I'm not the biggest fan of. What do you think?

I do really like the shoes and some of the handbags coming out. And the set of the runway the collection was presented on, was beautiful. Check out some other collection pieces and see what you think!

Page One: Inside the New York Times

(Sorry guys and gals, no fashion in this post)
Last week, I along with around 73 other 1st year Creative Communications students, gathered at the old Cinematheque theatre for an afternoon of journalism filled fun. As we nestled into our seats with popcorn in one hand, and a Jones soda in the other, director Andrew Rossi‘s “Page One: Inside the New York Times” documentary begins to roll.
It is no surprise that the way we receive our news is changing and evolving into something deeply embedded in technology, as the years continue roll on by. With newer media outlets such as Twitter, blogging sites, and Wiki Leaks (to name a few), the “need” for a printed newspaper is becoming less and less prominent. Rossi’s documentary takes you through the journey of what it’s like to work at the New York Times; striving to be on top of the news, and working to stay relevant and needed.
To be completely honest, I wasn’t particularly interested in the film going into the theatre, and was positive I would be asleep long before the halfway point. But David Carr’s (NYT columnist) colourful personality was interesting to watch as he guided us throughout the documentary. I would have been more interested to learn more about Carr’s life story; particularly how he managed to surpass a life of drug addiction, and land a job and at one of the world’s most well-known newspapers.
I understand that there are many people out there who are worried about the extinction of print news. But as a 23 year old who has grown up in the world of technology, and has never imagined herself working for a newspaper (big or small), I’m not overly concerned. Don’t get me wrong, I do think It is important and beneficial to be on top of the news so you are aware of what’s going on in the world. Luckily for me, there’s an app for that!

Where I'm Headed

After chatting with a few people about my blog, I noticed that a handful of people are under the impression that I already know how to sketch designs and that I know a lot about different fabrics and such; not yet the case. I am 100% taking on this task at a beginner level and hope to acquire these skill sets along the way. I know it will be hard, I know it may take time, and I know that I have a ton of frustration ahead of me. But I as mentioned earlier, my goal is to do what I can to see this through. This weekend I’m going to take a stab at sketching and I’ll be sure to post pictures of what I’m sure will be my embarrassing efforts at drawing.

Although I’m only a beginner, I do have an idea about how I want my clothes to look. Anyone who knows me well knows that I LOVE bright colours and stepping outside of the box when I mix and match. One thing about my style that I think is different from a lot of people is that I can’t be classified as one thing (bohemian, retro, ghetto fabulous, etc). Often when people go shopping they see something they like and think “Oooh that’s really cute...but it’s not my style.” If you like it...GET IT! Make it your style! Simple as that folks.

The pictures shown below are NOT anything I made! They are from the FOREVER 21 here in Winnipeg. This will give you a hint as to what kind of direction I want to go in with my line. The first one is a picture of the back of the dress, the front is all black. Enjoy ;)
